Colour Psychology In The Home

Did you know that using certain colours in the home can have a profound impact on your well being and every day life? This is because colour is clinically proven to have a large impact on human emotions and behaviours.

Therefore, psychology in interior design helps us make better decisions when choosing colours for different spaces to suit the purpose for which they are designed. Understanding how to surround yourself with your “best” colours in your home, workplace and any personal, professional or commercial space, will make you feel comfortable and good about yourself, enhance your confidence and significantly influence your relationships and interactions with others.

Colour Psychology In The Home

According to the world’s expert on the unconscious effects of colour, Angela Wright (2008), there are four psychological primary colours: red, blue, yellow, and green. But what effects can these colours have?

Red is attention grabbing as it implies power, warmness and strength. A great colour but err away from overusing it as it can have negative sides to it such as impacting strain upon you, as well as aggression and defiance. When used sparingly to add a pop of colour to an otherwise white or clinical room red can bring a warmth and vibrance to the room. An effective way to soften red is to pair it with other fabrics which have a more muted red tone through them.

As psychologically proven, yellow is the strongest colour! A sign of optimism and hope; yellow is associated with a happy mood, playfulness and joyful moments. Interestingly, yellow spaces enhance creativity and self-esteem. One could argue this is relatable to the sun and how the suns colour yellow makes the world a productive place. Yellow is the lightest colour on the colour wheel and therefore jumps forward to our eyes while other colours would recede. Use this to bring a room to life. Coordinate with complementary cool colours to really make the yellow zing and add highlights to your room.

Green – this is the emotionally calming colour! Green gives a sense of refreshment and harmony. It is associated with peace and universal love. Leatrice Eiseman, a colour specialist claims that people find earth tones to be relaxing because they unconsciously associate them with nature. As the colour of balance, it may have some negative effects too, such as being boring and too dull when incorrectly used, the key here is to keep greens vibrant and use a range of tones to keep it looking fresh rather than dull. A simple but very effective vertical blind with mixed louvres can provide a shot of colour into any room, pair with an Ice White Vogue track to keep things fresh or go for more earthy tones with an Espresso Brown Vogue Track each giving your vertical blind a sophisticated and high-quality finish.

Lastly, the popular blue. This is said to encourage intellectual activity, logical thought, and reasoning. Blue is deemed to lower the blood pressure and is a calming colour, encouraging reflection. Light, soft blues calm the mind and aid concentration and stronger blues stimulate clear thought. As well as being wonderfully serene blue can offer a luxurious and regal feel to a room or could conjure up memories of being beside the sea as shown in this fabulous curtain collection. How you use a colour can have an enormous impact on the finished look and feel to your room.
